St. Henry’s Way

A Medieval Pilgrimage Route in Finland

Turku – Rusko – Nousiainen – Mynämäki – Yläne – Säkylä – Köyliö – Kokemäki

St. Henry’s Way is a network of medieval pilgrimage routes. It runs from Turku to Kokemäki, connecting significant sites related to Saint Henry. Along the way are notable landmarks such as Saint Henry’s preaching chamber in Kokemäki, the site of the bishop’s martyrdom at Lake Köyliö, his burial church in Nousiainen, and Turku Cathedral, where his relics were transferred in the year 1300. The total length of the pilgrimage route is approximately 140 kilometers.

The St. Henry Pilgrimage Association was founded in 2000 to continue the revival of the pilgrimage path that began in the 1970s. In 1979, the route from Turku through Nousiainen and Köyliö to Kokemäki was officially marked. Today, ecumenical pilgrimages are held annually. Every third year, the pilgrimage covers the full route over the span of nearly a week. The final day of the pilgrimage coincides with the Catholic pilgrimage, held each summer in the northern section of St. Henry’s Way, from Yläne to Kirkkokari island in Köyliö.

Tour de Henrik is an annual summer bicycle pilgrimage (approx. 140 km) for 10–14-year-olds, traveling from Kokemäki to Turku along St. Henry’s Way. The pilgrimage concludes with a prayer service at Turku Cathedral.
