Tips for a pilgrimage

Preparing for a pilgrimage in Finland

A pilgrimage in Finland can take many forms—an afternoon walk through forest paths or a multi-week journey across vast landscapes. Whatever the length, the essence is the same: there is no race, no finish line. It’s not about reaching a destination, but about being present to the path itself.

When preparing for your pilgrimage, focus on simplicity and comfort. Whether your walk lasts a few hours or several days, being well-equipped helps you stay open to the experience.

What to pack?

Essentials for Any Hike:

Pack light but wisely. Snacks, water, a small first aid kit, and perhaps a journal or notebook can enrich the journey. Remember, every item you carry should serve your well-being or your reflection.

  • Pilgrim’s credential or stamp book – Some Finnish routes offer official stamps at waypoints, adding meaning to your progress.
  • Water or juice – Stay hydrated. For longer walks, consider a refillable bottle or hydration bladder.
  • Snacks – Easy-to-carry options like protein bars, nuts, and fresh or dried fruit keep your energy up.
  • First aid – Always carry a basic kit with plasters, painkillers, any personal medications, and blister treatment.
  • Dress for the weather. Finland’s climate can shift quickly. Choose outdoor clothing suitable for the season, and make sure it protects you from wind and rain. Bright colors are a good choice—they help you stand out in nature, which is important for visibility and safety.

Tip:  Use the layering system:

  • Base layer (moisture-wicking)
  • Mid layer (insulating fleece or wool)
  • Outer layer (waterproof and windproof)
  • Wear comfortable footwear. Your shoes should support long periods of walking on uneven terrain. Depending on the season and route, running shoes, hiking boots, or even rubber boots may be suitable. Don’t forget well-fitting sports or wool socks to keep your feet dry and warm.
  • Foot care kit – Blister plasters, foot balm, and tape can make or break your walk.

Seasonal Must-Haves:

  • In summer: Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun hat, and mosquito repellent—essential for comfort in the Finnish wilds.
  • Bring gloves and a hat. Even in spring and autumn, temperatures can be cool—especially in the mornings and evenings. Proper accessories make all the difference in comfort.
  • Warm drinks – A thermos of coffee, tea, or cocoa is a welcome comfort during breaks, especially in cooler weather.

For Longer Pilgrimages and Overnight Stays:

Meal Planning & Cooking

  • Identify campfire sites or shelters along your route.
  • Bring a camping stove or lightweight cookware if needed.
  • Carry enough water not only for drinking but also for cooking and washing.
  • Consider the environment by using biodegradable hygiene products.

Gear & Equipment

  • Use the layering system:
    • Base layer (moisture-wicking)
    • Mid layer (insulating fleece or wool)
    • Outer layer (waterproof and windproof)
  • Trekking poles help reduce knee strain and improve balance on uneven terrain.
  • Choose your shelter: tent, bivvy bag, or hammock depending on your route and accommodation preferences.
Note: Many Finnish trails offer hostels, cabins, and guesthouses, so camping is optional but a cozy way to connect with nature.
  • Always carry a map and compass as a backup, even if you use GPS.
  • Bring a power bank to recharge your phone, GPS, or headlamp.

Route & Planning

  • Plan your route carefully: know your daily distances, terrain, and rest stops.
  • Test all your equipment beforehand, especially new hiking boots—break them in to avoid blisters.

Health & Well-being

  • Conduct daily check-ins with yourself: monitor how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally. Adjust your pace as needed.
  • Pack only what you can comfortably carry.
